SHU-IZMZ attended WALKER STALKER CON last year, which was held at the McCormick Center and posted photos and its critique of the whole weekend event right HERE and I did enjoy the event, most notably because I was granted press passes for myself and my photographer. There were some very interesting Q&A panels there last year with knowledgeable people asking the questions.  My biggest complaint probably had to be the prices of autographs and photo-ops (some of which did not allow any pictures of any kind to be taken) and the fact that the interview panels for the guests to speak were not located in a separate area with better acoustics for sound. It was hard at times and very distracting having the interviews out in the middle of the floor with only curtain dividers to give the area its own boundaries. I have never been to any convention of any kind at Navy Pier, the location of which the upcoming WSC is going to be located at so I am very curious to see (more…)

BREAKING NEWS: Chicago Indie Project STILL Launches Kickstarter!

Still Poster 1 (small)

SHU-IZMZ always loves to hear from friends in the Chicago horror community that are working on film projects, ones that are independent and contain a slew of locals starring in and working on the production. Jason Coffman, a friend of mine for a number of years now whom I met from attending various movie festivals and movie-related conventions, has always introduced me to a number of cinematic gems over the years, most recently (more…)

NIGHTBEASTS gets theatrical release!

NIGHTBEASTSThose of you may recall SHU-IZMZ writing about the star of GREMLINS doing an indie horror film entitled NIGHTBEASTS quite some time ago…or you may not have. Nonetheless, I thought it was nostalgically cool that actor Zach Galligan was doing a horror film. I had not heard from him (more…)

14th Annual BlobFest in Phoenixville, PA- July 12-14th

Some may argue with me, but of all the great films legendary actor Steve McQueen has been in, I still find THE BLOB (1958) to be one of my favorite films he ever acted in. Granted, I am a horror fan and love sci-fi films of the ’50s and ’60s, but a film about an alien life form consuming EVERYTHING in its path as it grows and grows–No, we are not talking about me eating unlimited hot wings!–is a timeless classic story that never loses its charm.

What better way to show admiration, appreciation, and emulation towards a film than attending a whole 3-day festival honoring the film entitled BlobFest!?! Not only will THE BLOB be screened at The Colonial Theatre in Phoenixville, PA, the town the original movie was filmed in and around, but the actual theater that played such a pivotal role in the film will be screening the movie inside it. The BlobFest, entitled “Bug Out BlobFest” celebrates the best of the “buggy” sci-fi films. The event begins Friday with a stage show and an annual “Run Out Reenactment” and at the time of the posting of this press release, tickets for the Run Out have sold out! But fear not, those that didn’t get tickets already still can gather across the street and watch the event. This occurs at 9pm.

Other films being screened with THE BLOB are (more…)

faux pas films

faux pas filmsI had a chance to meet Michael while working on THE FUNERAL HOME: FIVE FINGER DEATH trailer and the dude seems pretty serious about filmmaking. He is new to the Chicagoland area but it seems like he is wasting no time getting his hands all bloody in finding folks to get involved in upcoming projects, myself included. SHU-IZMZ plans on attending the OVULATION filming and being an extra in some scenes. Enjoy the trailer and news on what is happening with Faux Pas Films! (more…)

To be quite honest, I was not a huge fan of MACHETE. That is not to say that I didn’t enjoy it, but I felt it could have been better for being a film directed by the very talented Robert Rodriguez. I loved Danny Trejo’s character and acting in it, but I felt that the generic-looking CGI that was used was totally bogus. Cheap-looking digital effects really dampen the mood of any good film. I get distracted by the crappy visual effects and it ruins whatever scene they are used in— that was my biggest gripe with any big-budgeted Hollywood film with an A-List director and cast attached to it. That being said, the talent associated with the sequel, MACHETE KILLS, is giving me a raging action-flick hard-on! Most notably that boner is erecting due to (more…)

PRESS RELEASE: Joe Hendrick’s DITCH stars Bill Oberst, Jr. and Katy Foley

Those of you who regularly read posts on the website or follow @shuizmz on Twitter or follow my posts on Facebook are probably well-aware that I consider actor and horror icon Bill Oberst, Jr. a friend, as well as a colleague of the Horror Community. I had him on SHU-IZMZ RADIO last week as a guest (along with the always delightful Dark Photographer Amanda Norman) and it was a special Holiday Episode. It was only fitting that I had on some guests that are also my friends. Well, here is a new feature length horror film that Bill is starring in, right on the heels of Bill winning “Baddest Villain” Award Saturday Dec. 30th at Zed Fest Film Festival in Hollywood for the role in Gabriel Sabloff’s film THE CURSE.

The following is a press release from Horror Unlimited and their magazine DIABOLIQUE. This horror mag looks pretty interesting and although I have not read an issue yet, it looks like it has some quality articles within its pages. I have browsed through an issue here and there when visiting one of my favorite magazine stops, CITY NEWSSTAND in the Portage Park neighborhood in Chicago. I thought I would share this press release for the latest issue of the magazine for SHU-IZMZ readers that are not familiar with the magazine. I am always happy to hear of magazines that are still in print and being published in a day and age when so many magazine companies are out of business or only in a digital format. Maybe DIABOLIQUE will send ol’ SHU a complimentary issue of their magazine for further inspection and review??? (more…)

We had a very long conversation (over 3 hours long) and I aired the radio show on Core of Destruction Radio and have the link available for download here at SHU-IZMZ: Bill Oberst, Jr. INTERVIEW. Natalie Slater and Bake and Destroy present SUGARSLAM III: BATTER ROYAL

Very soon there will be an interview with my friend Natalie Slater of Bake and Destroy. She is one of the coolest women out there I know and always has inspired me and my website. A fellow writer, blogger, and metalhead—we have a lot in common. We also love to eat. She can bake, which I can’t, but I sure do try to destroy when the event arises. We both have a love for horror films and her baking/horror column Slash and Dine at Brutal as Hell (link to her final post) is a testament to that. Check out her contest and download the interview when the link is up and posted. (more…)

All you fans of comicbooks and horror need to listen up right now!

JUNE 8, MILWAUKIE, OR—Acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro and novelist Chuck Hogan bring their New York Times best-selling series of novels, the Strain Trilogy, to Dark Horse Comics with an ongoing adventure that takes a terrifying spin on the vampire genre.

Renowned comics creator David Lapham (Stray Bullets, Silverfish) and artist Mike Huddleston (The Coffin, Butcher Baker) join forces in this comic book adaptation unlike any other—bringing del Toro and Hogan’s vision to life in a story that casts a deadly plague over the whole of humanity. The Strain Volume 1, collecting issues #1–#6 of this ongoing series, is a horror story unlike any other!

When a Boeing 777 lands at JFK International Airport and goes dark on the runway, the Centers for Disease Control, fearing a terrorist attack, calls in Dr. Ephraim Goodweather and his team of expert biological-threat first responders. Only an elderly pawnbroker from Spanish Harlem suspects a darker purpose behind the event—an ancient threat intent on covering mankind in darkness.

Praise for Guillermo del Toro’s The Strain:

“[The Strain] is one of the scariest comics on the stands, as genuine surprises await the reader at every turn of the page. Usually, such big reveals are left to the final moment, but with The Strain there’s almost a cliffhanger every few pages and that makes this series a truly surprising, and enjoyable, read.”—Broken Frontier

“One of the year’s best books. If I were to give you one bit of advice while reading this book, don’t read it in the dark.”—Comic Buzz

The Strain Volume 1 is on sale November 14 in comic shops everywhere!

killing for culture

killing for cultureThis is great news, folks! I am so fortunate to have a copy of the original printing of KILLING FOR CULTURE (ISBN 978-1-900486-87-3), a fascinating book on all films dealing with death. The book is a fascinating read (from what I read so far) and is a must have for any fan of horror films, mondo films, documentaries, morbid curiosity, or one whose fascination with death on film has not been sufficiently satiated. The previous edition published in 1994 and 1995 has been out of print for some time and sold 12,o00 copies. The previous edition was “pre-internet” (I bought my copy at TOWER RECORDS when I worked for the company, which is no longer around) and without material pertaining to the web.  I am so glad I grabbed it when I did. The book is one of the most controversial and influential modern texts and it now has a complete makeover. (more…)

cannibal+holocaustI have always been fascinated with the myth that is the “snuff film”. Frankly, with all the messed up murders and deaths that have been captured on films for various reasons, I can’t believe that no one has created a film that comprises of a victim being murdered and recorded for profit or one’s enjoyment. After all, just this week a man was caught eaten off the face of another man while high on bath salts or some other intensely dangerous drug. Cannibalism being covered in the news more than once this week seems pretty bizarre but not all too shocking so why should the mythology of the snuff film be nothing more than that: mythology.
