BLU-RAY RELEASE: ARROW VIDEO releases THE ‘BURBS on September 15th!

If one could not tell, THE ‘BURBS is my favorite Joe Dante film, if not one of my favorite horror-comedies of all time. I place horror in front of comedy because I feel the elements of horror, as well as the jokes scattered here and there throughout the written dialogue of the film are so prominent that Mr. Joe Dante himself must have made this film with fans of horror in mind.

The plot of THE ‘BURBS is quite (more…)

RELEASES: ARROW VIDEO releasing THE ‘BURBS to Blu-ray!

arrow video

Joe Dante’s THE ‘BURBSis one of my favorite comedies, or comedy-horrors as some may consider it, and having grown up in suburbia for the greater part of my childhood, I always wish I knew my neighbors like Tom Hanks’ character Ray did. Also, I wished I lived in a cul-de-sac so that I could skateboard and not have to mess with cars driving down the street all the time. ARROW FILMS puts out (more…)

NIGHTBEASTS screenings announced!

NIGHTBEASTSWay back in February of 2011, I posted a piece on a small independent horror film called NIGHTBEASTS because Bigfoot is cool and I can’t get enough of those types of horror B-films. Also, Zack Galligan of GREMLINS and WAXWORK starred in it.

Well, more than 2 years later, screenings are (more…)

TECH BRIEFING: WILLOW Blu-ray/DVD and ILM’s involvement

willowI received a very interesting bit of facts about Industrial Light & Magic in their earlier years. Since the All-new Digital Transfer was overseen by Lucasfilm and has brand-new, never-before-seen materials I thought I would give my readers the press release in its entirety. It really is cool to read about it, even if one is not (more…)

BLU-RAY RELEASE: WILLOW out out on BRD/DVD Combo today!

willowFolks, it is March 12th and WILLOW has arrived on Blu-ray and DVD today. Are you excited? I am, if only a tiny bit. Actually, I am very excited because I love Val Kilmer and he is magnificent in this. I also inadvertently made a little people joke. Since I am a big giant myself, and get made fun of continually (not really because I am big and would crush those that ridiculed me!), I get a free pass to make small jokes about smaller people…as WILLOW! I do have nothing but the utmost respect for actor Warwick Davis (Willow) because he is the most well-known little person acting (in my opinion) and the most remembered.

I got a little press from the folks at Lucasfilm Ltd. and 2oth Century Fox about comparing Elora and Harry Potter. Here is (more…)

THE STORY OF ROCK ‘N’ ROLL COMICS coming from Wild Eye Releasing!

Rock'n'Roll Comics

Rock'n'Roll ComicsI remember as a young, pimply metalhead/skater punk geek riding up to the local comicbook shop in the ‘burbs and perusing through the shelves of pulpy awesomeness and one particular comicbook catching my eye: ROCK ‘N’ ROLL COMICS. I thought the idea of fusing bios from my favorite metal and hard rock bands with artwork in a comicbook format was the greatest thing since hairy bush!

I bought issues from my favorite bands, including Metallica (before they sucked!), Anthrax, Ozzy Osbourne, and AC/DC. Then, a couple of years ago I had (more…)

GUROZUKA to be released by SYNAPSE!

I love Japanese films, especially horror films from their country because they contain so many bizarre elements and usually have some fun gore and scenes within them. I mean, RINGU and JUON are two of my creepiest favs and TOKYO GORE POLICE and MACHINE GIRL are so much fun. Not to mention two of my favorite directors is Takashi Miike are Akira Kurosawa. So, I have high hopes for GUROZUKA to entertain me, if only nominally. I also am looking forward to all the extra goodies that SYNAPSE FILMS usually offers on their Blu-rays and DVDS!

IN A GLASS CAGE out on DVD/BRD from CULT EPICS— NAZIS, anyone?!?

Los Angeles, CA (October 18th, 2011) –After a theatrical (limited) run in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, and Philadelphia, Cult Epics will release a new HD transfer of In a Glass Cage for the first time ever on Blu Ray and a new 2DVD Set. The film was directed by award-winning Spanish filmmaker Agusti Villaronga (Black Bread, The Sea, Aro Tolbukhin: In the Mind of a Killer) who also wrote the screenplay. In a Glass Cage was considered highly controversial upon its 1987 release. John Waters ‘top 10 film’, said about the film “They don’t make art-shockers like this anymore. In a Glass Cage is a great film but I’m scared to show it to my friends.” Cult Epics has secured a new HD Transfer of the film, and has produced many new bonus features for its new release.

In a Glass Cage, a psychological horror thriller is considered Agusti Villaronga’s Masterpiece, who’s new film Black Bread  was chosen over Pedro Almodovar’s The Skin I Live In, and Benito Zambrano’s The Sleeping Voices to represent Spain for the 2012 Oscars.  In a Glass Cage was recently named one of the most disturbing films ever made by Film Threat Magazine. Listed no. 5 of The Most Disturbing Movies Ever by

In a Glass Cage tells the story of an ex-Nazi sadistic child abuser named Klaus (Gunter Meisner) who is paralyzed and depending on an iron lung to live. A young man named Angelo (David Sust) who comes to nurse him was one of his victims years before. In a Glass Cage was inspired by the true story of 15th Century French knight Gilles de Rais.

In A Glass Cage retails for $29.98 on a 2-disc DVD and $34.98 on Blu-ray. The film came out on both formats on the 18th of October. In A Glass Cage has been released on DVD before, but never as a 2-disc DVD and NEVER BEFORE ON BLU-RAY! I have seen this film only as a shitty bootleg on VHS years and years ago when I was a teenager, so it will be VERY interesting to re-visit this film again as an adult (I like to consider myself one, anyways!). IN A GLASS CAGE comes in its original Spanish language with optional English subtitles. Click HERE for more info on its release.
CULT EPICS has always done a very fine job of releasing films with excellent transfers and a decent amount of extra features packed onto the discs. I hope this release does not disappoint. Keep checking back at SHU-IZMZ for my infectious thoughts on the films, as well as what extras are on the disc and how they fare to other releases of films I have seen. I hope to get a Blu-ray of the movie, but if not, I will be reviewing the DVD version of it. (Hint: CULT EPICS send me a Blu-ray, please!).

IN A GLASS CAGE Bonus Features:

-Featurette: Agusti Villaronga (2011)

-Q&A w/Agusti Villaronga (2010)

-Short films:  Anta Mujer (1976), Laberint (1980), Al Mayurca (1980)

WELL GO USA to release Jackie Chan’s LITTLE BIG SOLDIER in August!

Remember Jackie Chan, folks? He used to be, maybe still is, one of my fonder Martial Arts and physical comedic actors in HK Cinema. I used to really be into him, back about 20 years ago, but I feel that once RUMBLE IN THE BRONX came out, my interest in his films started to wane and wear off. I guess he just got so popular and when his films started to throw in Internationally known actors and actresses, his films no longer had that foreign HK look and feel to them anymore. RUSH HOUR just about killed it for me (not to say that the film was a terrible film, but it just was an average comedy with some cool action sequences in it). I believe this will be close to Chan’s 100th film, with 1911 being Chan’s 100th film. That is quite an achievement, especially for an actor/stuntman whose physical comedy has been so intense, almost taking his life on more than one occasion due to all the dangerous feats he attempts and usually succeeds in performing. Look for 1911 from Well Go USA. They have acquired distribution rights for that, as well. Read all about that HERE.

“Jackie Chan’s best film in years.” – TwitchFilm

“Plenty of action, crazy stunts, excellent martial arts, and comedy.” –

Audience Award Winner – New York Film Festival

Audience Award Winner – Valencia Film Festival

RELEASE: More nudity, violence, and gore in grindhouse-style slasher flick

I have already seen Frat House Massacre (2008) and had the luxury of experiencing it on a huge screen at the Portage Theater in July of 2009 at a Horror Society event (a site I used to write for) in Chicago. I enjoyed the film, primarily due to the style and large amount of nudity, gore, and a phenomenal soundtrack by Claudio Simonetti (of Goblin fame). I am happy to be able to revisit this film once again and see if I still have the same affection for it as I did two years ago. Check back for my thoughts on this film once I have reviewed the dvd release of it from Synapse Films.

Frat House Massacre
Label: Synapse Films
SRP: 19.95
Run Time: 116 Minutes In English
Color Widescreen 1.78:1 Region One Dolby Digital 5.1

Director: Alex Pucci
Stars: Rane Jameson, Chris Prangley, Jon Fleming
Production year: 2008

From the creators of CAMP SLAUGHTER comes FRAT HOUSE MASSACRE, a true homage to the best of the late 70’s grindhouse and early 80’s slasher films! Sean (Chris Prangley) and his little brother Bobby (Rane Jameson) thought joining the Delta Iota Epsilon fraternity would be the best time of their lives with parties, freedom, girls and sex. The fraternity president Mark (Jon Fleming of TVs WILL & GRACE and DANTEíS COVE), however, is a little strange. His twisted hazing rituals include extreme physical and mental torture that lead the boys down a horrific path of destruction and death. But death may be just the beginning, as this gritty twisted film unfolds. Inspired by actual events and set in the year 1979, FRAT HOUSE MASSACRE is a disturbing journey through the twisted world of fraternity boys, pledges and the not-so-innocent sorority sisters swept up in their madness. Loaded with violence, gore, nudity and a fantastic music score by Claudio Simonetti, this DVD is the director’s cut containing over twenty minutes of additional footage.

Bonus features include: Director’s Commentary, Crew Commentary, Deleted Scenes, “Making Of” Featurette.

RELEASES: Some Swedish sin from Impulse Pictures!

Impulse Pictures brings us some Swedish sinsationalism in the form of Christina Lindberg in her last starring role in the film WIDE OPEN. Below are the details of the dvd release, including a brief ploy synopsis. August is definitely going to be one hot month! Be sure to check back with Shu’s review and whether it is a film worth beating off to or just a one foreign hot mess!

Director: Gustav Wiklund
Stars: Christina Lindberg, Solveig Andersson

Christina Lindberg and Solveig Andersson met before in the violent cult-classic Thriller: A Cruel Picture and Swedish Wildcats. They meet yet again in Wide Open, Lindberg’s last starring role in a feature film! Taxi driver Paul and his beautiful journalist girlfriend Marianne have a strained relationship. Things get crazy when Paul brings his drunken father back to their apartment. As tensions between the two lovebirds rise, they decide to chill out at a wild movie party and things go from bad to worse (for Marianne anyway) when they both wake up in bed together with Marianne’s sister, Beryl! Marianne leaves, so Paul decides to spend some time watching strippers and taking Beryl along for some nighttime fun. Everything is going great, until Beryl gets picked up by the evil Mr. X and things turn dangerous. A stolen mink coat, drugs, and violent sex games lead Paul and Beryl to confront Mr. X during the film’s perverse stag party climax!

Chock full of nudity and sex, Wide Open is a must for all fans of sexy Swedish sin-ema!

Thale - Promoposter (Jan 2011)

The Norwegians are back with some cool dark folklore. I love the culture of Northern Europe- from their Black Metal, church-burning subcultures to the dark stories that come out of their country. Forget remaking genre horror films- just pick up a Norwegian book of folklore and get a Norwegian to translate it and make some movies using this dark material. Anyways, I am stoked to be seeing TROLL HUNTER at the Music Box Theater on June 24th and by the look of the THALE trailer, maybe the States will be able to get this film to play at an Indie movie theater. One can only hope. Check out the teaser trailer. It does not give much away as to whether the film will be cool or awful, but with many of the films coming out of Northern Europe, I am betting on the movie not sucking!

According to TWITCH, the film centers around a Huldra – a seductive forest spirit who appears from the front to be a beautiful young woman but who also has a cow’s tale and whose back appears to be like a hollowed out tree. The Huldra has been known to offer rewards to those who satisfy them sexually and death to those who fail to do so and are also prone to stealing human babies. Wow, that sounds pretty grotesque. I looked up the director, Aleksander Nordaas, on IMDb, and THALE is not even listed under his credits. Only Sirkel and a short from 2008, Bak lukkede dører, are listed under titles he directed. I am sure now that TWITCH has broken this news story, more information will be made available. Head over to TWITCH for more photos from the film, as well as another trailer for some of Nordaas’ prior work.

Check out the trailer below…

Horror DVD/Blu-Ray Releases

The following is a list of some horror that is coming out over the next 2 months on DVD or Blu-Ray. Dates are subject to change so do not get all hot and bothered if this occurs. This is just something to help you budget your hard-earned cash and decide which films you must have for your collection. I am currently accepting donations to the SHUTANG HORROR FILM FUND to help me get all the movies on this list. It is a purely profit organization and solely benefits me to get the movies I want for my collection and to review. If anyone did not catch my sarcasm, the aforementioned was a joke. Happy New Year everyone! Enjoy!
