BLU-RAY REVIEW: PHANTASM: RAVAGER (2016)

2d-bd-phantasmravager

2d-bd-phantasmravagerThe final film for the Tall Man, actor Angus Scrimm, and what seems to be the final entry in the series of films known for their shiny, metallic balls of death flying around bidding the desires of the harvesters of the dead, is upon horror fans. The fifth entry in the PHANTASM films, PHANTASM: RAVAGER (2016), brings fans back all the (more…)

BLU-RAY REVIEW: THE BOY (2016)

THE BOY cover

THE BOY coverThe amount of films whose premise is a creepy doll or at least a film containing a some creepy dolls in it are almost never ending. Maybe not never ending, but I easily found 30 or more films that have dolls in them and all the dolls are evil bastards. We have the whole (more…)

BLU-RAY REVIEW: THE TREATMENT a.k.a. DE BEHANDELING (2014)

Described as a label that “looks for intriguing, unsettling, unpredictable and provocative films from around the world“, is not “necessarily a genre label“, and with the tagline “International films with an edge“, Artsploitaiton Films first exploded onto the (more…)

BLU-RAY REVIEW: STRAY CAT ROCK: THE COLLECTION (2015)

Stray Cat Rock Series

STRAY CAT ROCK: DELINQUENT GIRL BOSS (1970)

BLU-RAY REVIEW: THE LOST FILMS OF HERSCHELL GORDON LEWIS (2013)

HGL1

Herschell Gordon Lewis is a legendary director, one that I have met and chatted with on more than one occasion, and could not be a nicer man around. Then one remembers that he has directed countless cult films such as BLOOD FEAST, TWO THOUSAND MANIACS!, COLOR ME BLOOD RED, and THE WIZARD OF GORE—And those are just (more…)

BLU-RAY REVIEW: MARK OF THE DEVIL (1970)

MOTD

Sometimes it is really funny to think of how one image used on the cover/poster artwork of a film’s release can become so iconic and immediately draw in a potential viewer. MARK OF THE DEVIL’s cult-like iconic shot of actress Gaby Fuchs shackled in iron chains and handcuffs, the look of agony permanently cemented onto her features before her tongue gets ripped out of her mouth is (more…)

BLU-RAY REVIEW: KILLERS (2014)

killers

I am starting to become a big fan of the Mo Brothers, although KILLERS is the only sample of their work I have seen. I have seen a small sampling of Timo Tjahjanto’s work as director of the segment “Safe Haven” in V/H/S/2 and “L is for Libido” in THE ABCs OF DEATH. I am anxiously waiting to pick up MACABRE and watch that. I will be ordering an import edition of that on Blu-ray.

What drew me to watching KILLERS (more…)

BLU-RAY+DVD REVIEW: JOHN WICK (2014)

jw1

In case you didn’t know what you were about to get into, you are about to begin reading a review of the film JOHN WICKby a film buff who generally dislikes Keanu Reeves as an actor. When the countless “Boos!” and jeering of all the Keanu Reeves admirers and lovers subsides, I will continue.  There has always been something about his seemingly (more…)

BLU-RAY+DVD Combo REVIEW: A WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES (2014)

walk

Maybe Liam Neeson has been typecast as an ass-kicking, thug-terrorizing, criminal-castrating man of virtue whose morality code goes out the window when dealing with the lowliest of lowly dirtbags hellbent on using, abusing, and murdering the innocent, or at least his own family. The quintessential star of the TAKEN series is back in A WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES in a somewhat similar yet completely different (more…)

BLU-RAY+DVD COMBO REVIEW: GET ON UP (2014)

get on up

Everyone knows James Brown’s music, whether it be the memorable horns and guitar strumming of “Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag” or the equally popular “I Got You (I Feel Good)”, and his particular sound and stage presence is known all over the world. Many consider him “The Godfather of Soul” and one of the founding fathers of funk music. Funk and soul music may not exactly be my (more…)

BLU-RAY REVIEW: THE GUEST (2014)

the guest cover bd

THE GUEST’s director, Adam Wingard, has a pretty good track record with me. Although I have not seen a good majority of his body of directorial work, what I have seen I have really liked. I guess I started watching his work (unbeknownst to me) with (more…)

BLU-RAY REVIEW: NIGHT OF THE COMET (1984)

NOTC

The Arrow Films’ blu-ray release of NIGHT OF THE COMET, filled with all the bells and whistles one would expect from an Arrow Films release (Boy, do I get jealous of some of the cool artwork and extra features that my friends over the pond get on a daily basis!), could not have come at a better time because I feel that this year might be the (more…)

BLU-RAY RELEASE: ARROW VIDEO releases THE ‘BURBS on September 15th!

BURBS1

If one could not tell, THE ‘BURBS is my favorite Joe Dante film, if not one of my favorite horror-comedies of all time. I place horror in front of comedy because I feel the elements of horror, as well as the jokes scattered here and there throughout the written dialogue of the film are so prominent that Mr. Joe Dante himself must have made this film with fans of horror in mind.

The plot of THE ‘BURBS is quite (more…)

BLU-RAY REVIEW: RIGOR MORTIS (2013)

RIGOR MORTIS

RIGOR MORTISDirector Juno Mak, quite possibly as famous for his role in (and the creator of) the Wong Ching-po directed slasher/love story REVENGE: A LOVE STORY as he is for his career as a pop singer with Universal Music, comes to horror fans once again with his directorial debut, RIGOR MORTIS, a homage of sorts to the (more…)

RELEASES: ARROW VIDEO releasing THE ‘BURBS to Blu-ray!

arrow video

Joe Dante’s THE ‘BURBSis one of my favorite comedies, or comedy-horrors as some may consider it, and having grown up in suburbia for the greater part of my childhood, I always wish I knew my neighbors like Tom Hanks’ character Ray did. Also, I wished I lived in a cul-de-sac so that I could skateboard and not have to mess with cars driving down the street all the time. ARROW FILMS puts out (more…)

SHU-IZMZ RADIO: SUMMER MIND MELTDOWN: Cop Corruption, Cannabis, and the Countess

Here is the latest episode of  SHU-IZMZ RADIO. Like I previously stated, it was a colossal undertaking and one that I enjoyed doing, but it was a pure labor of love. I recorded it over the course of a week almost, and it was fun working on it  (more…)
