I have been to quite a few CINEMA WASTELAND conventions in glorious Strongsville, OH and apart from traveling to Melt, Mind’s Eye Records, and various Exchange stores, Ohio will always be the home of Ken Kesey’s CINEMA WASTELAND for this movie bastard. It is, by far, the greatest fan-friendly convention in all of the Midwest, if not the entire fucking country.
This was the (more…)
Anyone that knows anything about horror films is well aware of a period in British horror film history where a woman by the name of Mary Whitehouse and the NVALA (National Viewers And Listeners Association) went on a moral crusade to fight to get certain morally reprehensible films banned by legislation. With the help of the Director of Public Prosecutions (commonly referred to as the DPP), a list of the most (more…)
Not too long ago, SHU-IZMZ had a chance to talk with owner and sole creator at CRIMSON MASK STUDIOS, Collin X Major, in Logan Square, Chicago, IL where his mask-making shop is located. Those that have shopped in Bric-A-Brac Records may have not even known that deep down in the dark basement, tucked away in the corner, a very determined and talented young man is sweating away at making some of the most iconic masks in horror films.
There are few books covering the sort of dark and twisted movies myself and others enjoy on a scholarly level, offering vast insight and deep cinematic excavations of films the mainstream movie-goer never will hear light of–unless a (more-often-than-not) silly remake comes about–let alone have access to that Stephen Thrower’s NIGHTMARE USA covers in his colossally thick hardcover (as well as soft cover edition) exploitation independent tome. If there were a class at one of the many fine learning institutions of higher education somewhere on this vast planet covering independent and horror exploitation films, than Thrower’s mammoth 527 page book would be the motherfucking (more…)
I have come to realize that I generally go to certain conventions just to shop. I catch up with old friends, go check out all the vendors, and look for cool new shirts, books, and movies. Occasionally there will be some (more…)

Phil Hall decided to tackle a very difficult subject in attempting to write a book entitled THE GREATEST BAD MOVIES OF ALL TIME, because lets be honest—one man’s “bad movie” may be another man’s epic film. Granted, there are “bad movies” we love, but generally most people know (more…)
Young director James Muro, going by J. Michael Muro on his IMDB page and in film credits later on in his movie career as a camera operator and cinematographer later on, directed STREET TRASH in 1987, one year after I got turned on to reading Stephen King and realized that horror films, books, and comics were all I really cared about and would consume my whole life up until this very moment and continue to so-forth and so-on, probably until the end of my life. Sadly, I never got to see STREET TRASH until (more…)
Sadly, British cinema is a topic I am far too unfamiliar with for one that would like to consider himself a film geek, but I am learning more each and every day by seeking out films of particular interest that also just happen to be movies made from across that little pond known as the North Atlantic Ocean. As I was opened up the pages to Headpress Publishing’s latest item on the menu regarding film, specifically British film, in OFFBEAT: British Cinema’s Curiousities, Obscurities, and Forgotten Gems (edited by Julian Upton), I realized that not only was I going to learning about a multitude of unique films old and new from the U.K., but that these particular films were movies (more…)
The title says it all, right? There is no need for a further description of Mladen Djordjevic’s THE LIFE AND DEATH OF A PORNO GANG out on SYNAPSE Blu-Ray. A porno gang goes on the road, traveling via a candy-colored, Willy Wonka drug-induced paint job Vokswagen van and make abstract, neo-political, artistic porn films in front of paying peasants and farmers who find it humorously entertaining. A young porn director fucked (more…)
DAVID GREGORY, most famous for being a very talented and visionary director of many featurettes and documentaries included on some of the most important films in the horror, cult, and exploitation genres such as TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE: THE SHOCKING TRUTH (2000), THE SPAGHETTI WEST (2005), and THE GODFATHERS OF MONDO (2003), had a chance to talk with SHU-IZMZ RADIO about his latest artistic endeavors of creating a horror anthology modeled after the Theatre Guignol entitled THE THEATRE BIZARRE. Gregory directed the short entitled “SWEETS“, as well as being the creative talent behind the genesis of the whole project and organizing it. Gregory tells Shu all about the film and the filmmaking process behind it, as well as how he divides up his time between making feature films (as he did with directing PLAGUE TOWN) and running SEVERIN FILMS. THOU SHALT NOT KILL…EXCEPT a.k.a. STRYKER’S WAR (1985) at one point was going to be named BLOODBATH, before STRYKER’S WAR, when the film’s first genesis was a Super 8 version that starred Bruce Campbell as the lead instead of the film’s eventual lead Brian Schulz. The film has many of the familiar faces from the Michigan group of filmmakers that included Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, Scott Spiegel, Timothy Patrick Quill, and another celebrity from Michigan (well, quasi-celebrity): a Mr. T impersonator that went around the state doing appearances and even advertising for the Michigan State Fair by the name of Robert Rickman. The film is packed with so much character, humor, violence, and even a bit of blood and gore.
A film that was pitched as being a movie about Marines vs. the Manson Family, is just that. A hippie-psycho cult led by the director of the EVIL DEAD trilogy and SPIDERMAN, Sam Raimi as Cult Leader, goes around the woods (more…)
Maybe you have heard of director, writer, and producer Donald F. Glut. After all, he wrote the movie novelization for THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK. But before Don was writing Sci-fi movie novelizations Don was busy making amateur horror and science-fiction films (at the age of 9) featuring monsters, human monsters, and dinosaurs! Hell, why am I even wasting time telling you all about (more…)
Joshua Grannell, better known as Peaches Christ–the drag queen of San Francisco’s midnight horror film screenings–has a handful of short films under his…err…I mean HER belt. The genesis of ALL ABOUT EVIL was the result of a mixture of many of them, many with budgets around $50. ALL ABOUT EVIL is a b-horror film with an all-star cast including Natasha Lyonne (SLUMS OF BEVERLY HILLS), Thomas Dekker (A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET remake), Cassandra Peterson (ELVIRA: MISTRESS OF THE DARK), Mink Stole (PINK FLAMINGOS), Noah Segan (DEADGIRL), and Jack Donner (STAR TREK t.v. series) in some of the funnest and oddly wonderful roles. In fact, the whole film was quirky and beyond entertaining.

One of my all-time favorite Japanese horror films is Nakata’s RINGU (1998), a film I first picked up while at a comicbook convention when I was in my early 20’s. It was my introduction to Japanese horror films and had it been any other horror film I may not have gotten so into J-Horror and just stuck to anime. The film GUROZUKA had elements of RINGU in it, as well as many American slasher films from the ‘80s and even more current ones such as SCREAM (which really pays homage to slasher films like HALLOWEEN and FRIDAY THE 13th).
GUROZUKA starts off (more…)

One of my major pet peeves is the releasing of a film that is notorious for nudity, sex, violence, and gore—and releasing it cut and chopped to pieces, removing the nastiest of the aforementioned characteristics that gave the particular film its notoriety. Today, the Koreans have royally pissed me off in releasing an 87 min. version of ILSA: SHE WOLF OF THE SS, the Korean Import version, where 9 minutes has been removed from the film. Generally, all scenes showing below the waist frontal nudity has been completely cut out. If anyone has read my posts they will realize that I am a fan and connoisseur of women who choose to leave their pelvic regions unshaven. I am a fan of “the bush”. If I were to choose an era of porn films to watch, the ’70s would be my predilection. (more…)
First of all, with a few exceptions, I really hate these kinds of “reality”, documentary-like, amateur-footage, phony horror flicks. The filmmakers of THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT did it first (if we don’t count Deodato’s CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST) on a shoestring budget and it worked. It made a butt-load of money and was a box office success. The marketing campaign was genius and if you went in to the film not knowing if they were real authentic footage or it was indeed a movie than you had an even more terrifying time.
Let’s fast-forward about 9 or 10 years and (more…)
