If one could not tell, THE ‘BURBS is my favorite Joe Dante film, if not one of my favorite horror-comedies of all time. I place horror in front of comedy because I feel the elements of horror, as well as the jokes scattered here and there throughout the written dialogue of the film are so prominent that Mr. Joe Dante himself must have made this film with fans of horror in mind.
The plot of THE ‘BURBS is quite (more…)

Folks, it is March 12th and WILLOW has arrived on Blu-ray and DVD today. Are you excited? I am, if only a tiny bit. Actually, I am very excited because I love Val Kilmer and he is magnificent in this. I also inadvertently made a little people joke. Since I am a big giant myself, and get made fun of continually (not really because I am big and would crush those that ridiculed me!), I get a free pass to make small jokes about smaller people…as WILLOW! I do have nothing but the utmost respect for actor Warwick Davis (Willow) because he is the most well-known little person acting (in my opinion) and the most remembered.
I got a little press from the folks at Lucasfilm Ltd. and 2oth Century Fox about comparing Elora and Harry Potter. Here is (more…)
I really thought WRONG TURN 4: BLOODY BEGINNINGS upped the gore ante and was miles apart from the entertainment value of the prior entry in the films’ series. Let’s be honest—WRONG TURN 3: LEFT FOR DEAD was the weakest entry in the series. I dug the sequel to the original because Henry Rollins, one of my idols in High School when I was into weightlifting and punk rock, is in it. He (Rollins) also does not die within the first half-hour like I was sure he would. So, hopefully the fifth film in the series, WRONG TURN 5: BLOODLINES (released on Blu-ray and DVD October 23rd) will continue with the gore, have some gratuitous nudity, and not make itself out to be something more than it is. Declan O’Brien directed the previous entry in the series and I really dug it. I hope he follows a similar formula and improves on the gore and creative deaths even more! I just want a very violent horror film, on par with most of the way the series has been. I want to (more…)

I just watched the trailer for WARRIORS OF THE RAINBOW: SEEDIQ BALE and I have to say that it looked to be pretty damn cool. It sort of reminded me of THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS, just in that it has a native tribe fighting against the military and I don’t think there really are going to be any other similarities except that the film is based on history and it looks to be pretty violent and have some wonderful cinematography! Check out the trailer here, as well as some of the screen shots from the movie. Here is the synopsis:
Wei Te-sheng’s epic film Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale reclaims an extraordinary episode from 20th-century history, which is little known, even in Taiwan. Between 1895 and 1945, the island was a Japanese colony (more…)
Tim Burton has yet to disappoint me with any film he has directed. Yes, I did not loathe his remake of PLANET OF THE APES with Mark Wahlberg (it was not very good, though). I have seen bits and pieces of the original DARK SHADOWS television show, but really am curious as to how Burton is going to do it. The cast is incredible, starring all the Burton regulars like Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, but also has some actors and actresses in it I am very curious to watch perform such as Jonny Lee Miller (HACKERS) who I thoroughly enjoyed most recently in Season 5 as a professional motivational speaker (like a less annoying version of Tony Robbins) and Eva Green (CASINO ROYALE) whose character also would have worked if Lisa Marie got the role and was still in Tim Burton’s life.
UNEARTHED FILMS is going to be releasing this. Just try and tell me that this is not one of the more fucked up things you have ever seen! JUST TRY! (more…)

Things get crazy when Paul brings his drunken father back to their apartment. As tensions between the two lovebirds rise, they decide to chill out at a wild movie party and things go from bad to worse (for Marianne anyway) when they both wake up in bed together with Marianne’s sister, Beryl! Marianne leaves, so Paul decides to spend some time watching strippers and taking Beryl along for some nighttime fun. Everything is going great, until Beryl gets picked up by the evil Mr. X and things turn dangerous. I remember watching this television show as a young lad and have not seen it since. I am sure the show is going to seem like some type of sick joke, but I still want to pick this up…for nostalgic reasons. Shout Factory is selling the box set over at their website for $29.99 plus S&H and if you order soon you may be able to get a limited edition glossy photo of the whole cast! I really am cracking up as I am typing this post up. Max Headroom was a selling device used by Coke and it’s so ironic that they made a whole television series out of it. I guess I should not be surprised as there are so many tv shows that were used solely as marketing and selling devices for items (G.I. Joe for action figures/ Transformers for cool toys, etc…). I guess we can all be grateful that the “Where’s the Beef?” lady from Wendy’s commercials never was given her own sitcom based on the iconic old lady from the commercials. I don’t know- the show possibly would be a cult hit. Who knows these days?
Breaking Glass Pictures has announced the April 5 DVD release of director Mark Claywell’s documentary “American Jihadist.” The Slamdance “Best Doc” winner follows American-born Muslim militant Isa Abdullah Ali and his life story. The documentary has played at over a dozen film festivals and won Best Documentary at last year’s Slamdance. Isa Abdullah Ali is an American soldier, a family man, and a Jihadist. Calling one all three of those things seems to me to be a colossal contradiction and I am sure that will be one thing looked at and probably discussed during the course of the film. Ever since 9/11, I have been personally interested in learning more about those individuals whose faith and religion is hell-bent on destroying my place of birth, the beloved United States. Well, at times there are injustices and key elements that even I may disagree or find to be wrong, but having some democracy in one’s nation is a wonderful thing.
I am very interested to get a hold of this film and see what it’s all about. Aside from gory horror films, I am a total geek for a well-made documentary. At times, I almost prefer to watch documentaries over horror films. The sole reason is that I love to learn about new ideas, values, customs, and regions. Documentaries serve as a breeding ground for knowledge and are excellent learning tools for those that do not like reading books. They make learning that much more fun and video footage always can tell so much more in a far quicker span of time than reading a few pages of a book can. I love reading too, but sometimes I want a quick stimulating story told in about two or three hours than I want to read a thick, lengthy book that may take well over a day or two to read if read straight through. That is my personal mantra on why documentaries rule!
The following is the documentary’s synopsis courtesy of Breaking Glass Pictures:
American soldier. Family man. Jihadist. Isa Abdullah Ali is a person of many identities and contradictions, but in the beginning, he was a bullied young boy growing up in America’s capital. At fifteen he joined the American army, and as a young man he converted to Islam and fought alongside the Amal militia and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Though the details of his past are murky, Isa claims to have killed more than 150 people in the fight to defend his faith.
Through Isa’s own words and those of family members, psychologists and political experts, this award-winning documentary attempts to decode the social and personal influences that can lead an individual down a path to radicalism. American Jihadist reaches beyond easy labels to grasp the nuances behind one man’s decision to fight — and kill — for his religion.
The DVD will also include behind-the-scenes featurettes.

In anticipation of the mildly entertaining, extremely amusing cult smash-hit Birdemic, fans on the West Coast can see the film at The Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, TX and Cinefamily in Los Angeles, CA simultaneously on February 25th . However, LA fans are treated to an appearance by director Nguyen, stars Alan Bagh and Whitney Moore who will be in attendance signing copies of the film.
Remember, Nguyen is a Master of the Romantic Thrillers! I met this guy in Chicago at the Music Box Theater for the Midwest Premiere of Birdemic and he was nice as hell. He let me and my friends get some photos with him and I even got a free hanger signed by him. As far as his movie goes, it is going to be a cult classic just for its ridiculous absurdity and hilarious special effects, cheap budget, ultra-atrocious acting, and ridiculous plot.
